Power of attorney

You need a Power of Attorney (POA) for your customs broker to legally authorize them to act on your behalf in dealing with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). This allows the customs broker to: Prepare and Submit Documents, Pay Duties and Taxes, Communicate with CBP, and Ensure Compliance:

You need to provide your Employer Identification Number (EIN) when importing into the U.S. as it serves as your unique ID with U.S. Customs:

1. Importer ID: Identifies you as the importer for tracking.
2. Customs Clearance: Required for filing entries and paying duties.
3. Compliance: Verifies your legitimacy and ensures regulation compliance.

Individuals can use a Social Security Number (SSN) instead of an EIN.

Copy of Identification

Drivers need to provide identification, such as a passport or driver’s license, for:

1. Security Compliance: Required at international borders.

2. Identity Verification: Confirms the driver’s responsibility for the shipment.

3. Customs Clearance: Ensures legitimacy in the import/export process.

Common IDs include a passport, driver’s license, or commercial driver’s license.

5106 Form

The 5106 Form (Importer Identity Form) is used by U.S. Customs to create or update an importer’s profile. It collects key details like business name, address, EIN/SSN, and contact info. This form is required for new importers or when updating information, ensuring smooth customs processing.

Other Documents

These can include a commercial invoice detailing the goods and their value, and a bill of lading or airway bill as proof of shipment. A packing list should be provided to outline the shipment’s contents, along with a certificate of origin verifying the goods' origin. Importers must also secure a customs bond to guarantee payment of duties, and file an Importer Security Filing (ISF) for ocean freight. An entry summary (Form 7501) is required for customs clearance, and specific permits or licenses may be necessary for regulated goods.
